Perhaps the most timeless trend that constantly gets questioned is the art of mixing prints. Many of you have come to me with questions revolving around the issue, and it's a fun one to talk about. Let's see one of the latest inquiries:
"I've always been interested in mixing prints, but don't know how. What's appropriate for someone my age? I want to look fun and cute, but not crazy."
-Krista, 31
Are you nodding your head in agreement? Do you have stripes, plaids, and florals in your closet that you have no idea how to mix? It's not scary. It's actually very simple, if you follow four simple formulas. Once you master these formulas and are comfortable styling yourself, you can branch out and try new mixtures as well! Alright, let's see our options:
mix: micro and macro prints
A midi skirt and cropped top is perfect for a casual day out. You don't have to show tummy - you can also tuck one of your shirts or blouses into a skirt that hits at the smallest part of your waist. Because you're drawing attention to the smallest part of your body, you can play with prints to compliment the look. A larger print on something flowy creates beautiful movement and depth. A smaller print on something structured creates sleek lines. When you're mixing macro and micro prints, just remember to stay in the same color family. This keeps the look age appropriate while still being trendy.

mix: two prints, and add a solid
For a more sophisticated look, you can mix two prints in the same color family as long as you tie it together with a solid. A jacket is the perfect way to do this, because it can be the statement, without letting the patterns be too overwhelming. Again, look at the micro and macro prints and how they compliment each other. Keep accessories simple with all of these patterned looks for clean and sophisticated outfits.

mix: your accessories
Does the idea of mixing prints sort of scare you? Start of simple by mixing accessories. An animal print jacket and plaid scarf is the perfect mixing prints outfit formula for beginners. Animal prints usually come in a neutral, so the scarf can be your colored statement piece. Keep the rest of the outfit simple with jeans and a white tee, but stay dressy with a black leather bootie. This way even when you remove the jacket, you'll still look put together - not like you just rolled out of bed.

mix: florals and stripes
This is a great outfit formula because most of us have these things in our closet already. A pinstripe or gingham cropped trouser and a floral blouse go perfectly together - complimenting without overwhelming each other. Wear it to work with a ballet flat and dainty necklace, and then trade out for statement boots and a chunky necklace for an evening out. Keep in mind that you still need to follow the golden rule of mixing - one macro pattern and one micro pattern - for the perfect balance.
